Rain checking forms cracks on the shoulder of the fruit. Excessive moisture on the fruits and especially after a long dry spell can favor occurrence of rain checking. The rain checking cracks can also be seen throughout the fruit. The surface of the symptomatic fruits can be leathery in appearance and feels rough when touched.
