Fungal Disease

Anthracnose is a widespread fungal disease that affects capsicum (bell peppers), causing significant losses if not properly managed. This disease, caused by Colletotrichum nigrum, can be particularly devastating in warm, humid climates where capsicum is commonly cultivated. Farmers and gardeners alike should be aware of its symptoms, causes, and management practices to protect their crops.

Symptoms
Anthracnose presents on capsicum fruits as dark, circular, sunken spots that may vary in size but can reach over an inch in diameter. These spots are often covered with black dots, which contain fungal spores. After periods of rain or heavy dew, pinkish spore masses may ooze from the spots. If left unchecked, fruits can become entirely rotted and may fall from the plants or remain as dried, shriveled "mummies." The disease can also affect leaves and stems, though symptoms in these areas tend to be less severe, making it difficult to detect the disease before fruit symptoms appear.

Cause
This disease is caused by the fungus Colletotrichum nigrum, which is carried through both soil and seeds. The fungus survives on plant debris, stems, and leaves, spreading throughout the growing season.

Comments
Anthracnose is a common problem in vegetable-growing regions worldwide. The disease can quickly spread through infected fruits, which act as reservoirs of spores that are easily washed or splashed onto other plants during irrigation or rainfall.
